Capoeira (pronounced KIGH-po-air-ah) is in the purest sense a dance. In Brazil in the 16th century, slavery was enforced and the African slaves were not allowed to maintain their fighting skills. So they developed capoeira - combining music, liquid movement and subtle (or not-so-subtle) fighting skills. They were able to maintain their strength, bond with their community and convince their owners that they were dancing.

I also understand that one of the elements is that you can't touch the person you are up against....because in the old days that would have appeared combative and the purpose of capoeira was to keep up the skills so when it was time to fight a legitimate enemy you were prepared Interesting!
