Virginia state Sen. Robert Hurt (R) is a leading candidate in the Republican primary for the seat of freshman Rep. Tom Perriello (D). The National Republican Congressional Committee has been promoting Hurt, who faces six opponents in the June 8 primary election.

Hurt has been criticized for a vote he made five years ago in the state legislature for some tax increases in a budget plan to shore up Virginia's shaky finances. Critics have used the vote to question Hurt's conservative credentials

Roll Call presently rates the Virginia 5 race as a tossup, in part because Perriello was narrowly elected in 2008 in a district that has a conservative lean.

- Greg Giroux, Roll Call

Note: This interview is part of a series of video interviews with 2010 congressional candidates who stop by the Roll Call offices. Over the course of the next year, we will feature interviews from as many top races as possible.

  • A vote for this man is a vote for Uranium mining. I'm not a typical left wing jagoff by any means either but This single issue trumps all others for me. It's almost impossible to mine that stuff without radioactive leaks.
