Guantánamo Bay: A decade of damage to human rights

On 11 January 2002, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the first detainees were transferred to the US naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Since then, the detention facility there has made the world's news headlines for the shocking human rights concerns associated with it - including arbitrary detention, secret detention, torture and other ill-treatment, renditions, and unfair trials.
Ten years on more than 150 detainees remain at Guantánamo Bay. The majority are in indefinite detention without charge or trial. Those who have been charged face unfair trial by military commission and some can face the death penalty if convicted. The government claims that even those found not guilty can be returned to indefinite detention. There has been essentially no accountability or redress for the human rights violations to which they and other detainees have been subjected.
Human rights concerns in Guantánamo Bay remain an unfinished story. How long before the US government closes the book on Guantánamo and meets its human rights obligations?
Sign the petition here: http://bit.ly/endguantanamo! We will deliver it to President Obama before his 2012 State of the Union address on 24 January.

Most probably there is no pressure from their gov, wherever they are from. Obviously their gov have to do what the US demands or they don't care about their own citizens. Over all there there is a double standard here and all it does is just lose it's credibility

Amnesty has immense power in its use of unity towards human rights of fences. Signing a petition voices the fact that many people are displeased by the lack of American action. Knowing Amnesty, the petition is there for you to sign as a lover of human rights, regardless of where you live.

For Amnesty International to have maximum impact, it needs to address the corellation between Camp Delta, Guantanamo Bay and Concentration Camps. It should start addressing Guantanamo for what it trully is, i.e. a Concentration Camp. We make references to that definition with notorious Camps like Auschwitz, Treblinka, Majdanek, Buchenwald, Dachau etc. During a recent quiz, a question was asked "which is the longest running Concentration Camp in History" ? The correct answer was Guantanamo !

Before you go around calling others names you should know more about it. Obama said that if he was elected, he would close Gitmo down. He has failed to do so yet outwardly claims he is against it. It does not matter who opened this place. He is the one currently in charge and has had years to close it. We play way to many "paperwork" games in the US.
