@panzuman One of the oldest bows on Earth was of Scotch Pine, if you make the limbs very wide, it should be o.k. Maple makes an excellent bow! I carved one for my girlfriend that is lightning fast and dras at 50lbs.

Hazel can make a decent bow...the harder the wood the better...the stave must exhibit both great elasticity on the back and compression strength on the belly...some good woods for bows are Yew, maple, bay, osage orange, hickory, ash, apple.

@tomdownard4179 There are many hazels throughout northern CA on the coast. I would bet western OR would have it as well. The nut is nutrient rich, and as you see the wood is usefull as well.
i preffer ray mears he is my idol but az bushcraft is good too !!
