It's going to break my heart when they begin to block the videos of Harlan County.. all I wanted is for everyone to enjoy, to see all the beauty that Harlan County has to offer...
"As one of 13 large old-growth tracts remaining in the eastern United States, Blanton Forest is a diverse ecological treasure. Many of the trees are 3 feet to 4 feet in diameter, towering 100 feet above the forest floor. Several trees have been dated to the late 1600s. Blanton Forest contains several forest communities, including mountaintop wetlands known as acid seeps and mixed-mesophytic deciduous forest. Many tree species such as sugar maple, tulip poplar, various oaks, hemlocks, beech and several magnolias make up the forest canopy. " For more just go to

Many of the majestic hemlock pines in this area are infested with hemlock disease. Ky Afield has a great video hemlock disease in Blanton Forest on you tube.

This video is about a forgotten path in Blanton Forest, The High Branch. No one walks this path anymore. It's a very beautiful place. We wish so much it could be walked upon again. The stream is gorgeous and at the top ridge are very many beautiful large cliffs and rocks and very large old trees and we also seen many tracks of wild life , but the are no more paths to follow, as of right now it would be easy to get lost. Since no one has been up the High Branch so long it is very overgrown and many large trees have fallen over the stream. Many hemlock has fallen because of the hemlock disease. Many years ago a logging road would lead you up the Branch, but it is over grown and in many places washed away by the stream. We hope so much that maybe some day soon the path will be opened up again, it would make a great addition to the trails . It would be a challenging trail, but worth it for it's beauty. How long it is I can't say, but it would take a couple of hours to walk. We wish and hope so much the path will be walk upon again. It's a gorgeous place for everyone to enjoy. Since much of the logging roads are still there they can also be used as trails. We wanted so much to film all the beauty up High Branch, but they was just too much to put into one film. The High Branch is worth the work and effort to open up again, It's one of my favorite places back here. It's beautiful and they are many forgotten places for everyone to enjoy..
In memory of Basil Webb 1923-1943 Basil joined the Army when he was 16 under the name of Asher B. Webb On the early morning after 1:00 AM of Feb. 3, 1943 the ship, Coast Guard vessel U.S.A.T. Dorchester was struck by a torpedo fired by the German sub, U-223. With a direct hit to the engines, the ship sank in 15 minutes. Almost 700 of the 900 men on board, including Basil, perished in icy waters approx. 100 miles from the Greenland coast. Survivors described many men , underdressed from the crowded condititon below, rushing out and freezing to the deck, trying to pound ice from the pulleys used to lower life rafts, and the fluid in their eyes would begin to freeze. Most survivors were rescued by the Comanche, another ship in the convoy. We lost Basil at young age. He never returned home. He will always be remembered. Special thank you to Mimi Tucky for finding the information about Basil.
music is from the soundtracks of: Braveheart and Dragonheart. "The secret wedding and To the Stars"
