  • it is not quite true that the instrument was "invented" by Scottish and Irish settlers. It didn't come out of nowhere, but rather was *adapted* from a German instrument called "Scheitholt". This instrument was brought to the appalachian region by German settlers from Pennsilvania.

    If you're interested in the history of the dulcimer, I recommend Ralph L. Smith's "Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions", which is an excellent book.
