When I was young, I'd have done it (with a chase boat).
It'd make a fun race, even though tactics would be limited.
Probably would want to pack a sandwich and a few drinks.

I think the point is that it's the roaring southern ocean and winds more than the distance. down near tassie they get waves bigger than hawaii and the wind can be like cape horn. He's obviously an awesome sailor.
