Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle stood with mayors from the western suburbs in Maywood today to discuss the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding that will be used to improve their communities in the near future.

President Preckwinkle said that the $1.4 million in CDBG projects in the western suburbs translates into real jobs for people in the community and demonstrates her administration's commitment to making Cook County the economic hub of the Midwest.

"As I said during the campaign, and during my time as President of the County Board, economic development is a primary focus of this administration," President Preckwinkle said. "I believe that stronger municipalities will make us a stronger county and these projects will strengthen our communities by creating jobs and revitalizing our neighborhoods."

President Preckwinkle made these comments at a news conference following a roundtable discussion with mayors from west suburban municipalities. Mayor Henderson Yarbrough Sr. of Maywood spoke about the vital importance of the sewer improvement project that will help restore the village sewer systems after the heavy rains and flooding from the previous year.

"The Village of Maywood would like to thank Cook County for critical funding of replacement storm sewers in a section of Maywood that was devastated by last year's flooding," Mayor Yarbrough said. "This capital improvement project will focus on basement back-up issues and reduce the occurrences of sewage backup caused by heavy rainfalls."

The Maywood CDBG sewer project is a 2011 combined sewer relief project. This capital improvement project will focus on basement back-up issues located at 14th Avenue and 16th Avenue between Madison Street and Washington Boulevard in Maywood. The project will involve installing sewer infrastructure on Warren Avenue, which will provide the means to better convey wastewater flow into the sewer system.

There are a total of 13 CDBG projects in the West Suburban area including 5 street reconstruction projects, 5 alley reconstruction projects, 2 water/sewer improvement projects, and 1 sidewalk reconstruction project.
