The trip to Marash was a crazy one to say the least. We rented a car at Mardin just near Syria and drove against the clock to get to Marash in time. All the flights were booked, so we had to make it within a few hours.
Our amazing driver / fixer put a little too much faith in the Hyundai rental, and we sat at an average speed of 160-190 km/h all the way. What he forgot was that the faster you go, the more gas you use!... we came to the top of the mountain about 40 mins out of Marash and realised that the gas tank was nearly bone dry.
Like something out of a movie, we rolled down the mountain, and then hobbled into the outskirts of the city on the smell of an oily rag... and JUST made it to a gas station before the car died.
Needless to say, we made it and discovered the amazing stretchy goat's milk Ice-Cream of Marash 'Mado Dondurma' - (Dondurma = ice-cream).
The recipe is known only by 3 people (brothers / owners). Each person involved in making the ice-cream is compartmentalised and the full recipe is stored in different segments in different languages in different places.
The taste was amazing - and 3 big boxes of the ice-cream made it all the way back to Thailand! (with a lot of help from some dry ice!)
Enjoy.
