@dcb1138 You are an idiot. The plan to buy seats on the Soyuz has been in effect for several years, because Bush never supplied the funding needed to have the Ares ready in time for the shuttle fleet retirement. Obama is cleaning up Bush's mess and setting NASA on the right course. It will be painful and messy, but that is the price American pays for electing a moron two terms in a row.

Purchasing Soyuz flights is a national disgrace.
Sally Ride's shuttle scenario 2 is to complete the manifest through 2011 and add one more flight in 2012.. ignoring the hard cut off in 2010. If NASA funds COTS-D and SpaceX meets their promise to have flights ready by the middle of 2012 then where's the gap?
The cost per seat of Soyuz is $51 million, with a maximum of 3 (more likely 1) seat per flight. SpaceX is offering $20m per seat with 7 seats available per flight.
