Flight to Gapuwiyak in a 5 seater plane, Honeyboy was pretty worn out. The night before was difficult sleep so we caught a nap wherever and whenever we could... at the airport, in the plane. To keep cool, Emmanuel slept near a dripping tap outside the airport no jokes.
Arnhem Land, especially Gapuwiyak, is very different to the rest of the world. Video cameras and mobile phones are allowed to be in use whilst flying. Non-passengers including children allowed on the tarmac.
Spirits rose as we approached Gapuwiyak, Elijah was flying on to Milingimbi and Honeyboy, Emmanuel and I were jumping off at the next stop.
A small group of family members greeted the guys with a hero's welcome... wives, kids, brothers, brothers-in-law. Honeyboy's 2 sons ran onto the tarmac lol. Anyway they're such happy kids, Shaun the youngest and Michael Jarvis the eldest son, haven't seen children so joyous for a long time.
Gerald Wunungmurra and Terrence Wanambi caught up with the news on the Osaka trip and walked with us into the community. Little kid doesn't mind dragging someone's luggage... thanks mit!
Our walk was interrupted by kids making a fuss over a snake, this is community life and this is Gapuwiyak, home for Honeyboy and Emmanuel.
Gapuwiyak is an impoverished Aboriginal community in Eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. It is firmly caught in a sandwich between Western mainstream society and traditional Yolngu culture. Gapuwiyak is one of the most remote main communities in the Northern Territory, it doesn't have all-season road access (during parts of the wet season, the dirt roads get washed out or become mini creeks which trap any unsuspecting 4WDs), it is serviced by one general store for a population of around 1000, there is no fresh meat in the store only frozen (though meals are supplemented by bushtucker, fish, other seafoods and game brought in from the bush and sea), and the kids are natural athletes - obesity has not caught on here yet (malnutrition might be more of an issue), sports and dancing are part of daily physical activity for many children and teenagers... walking, running, jumping... dancing to a hypnotic hip hop beat or to the soaring vocals of singers and a didgeridoo player.
Gapuwiyak needs to decide what sort of community it wants to be, and to get the right sort of assistance to see the vision come to fruition. Incredibly talented kids and adults there, amongst the most talented in all of Arnhem Land and noted by anthropologists as a community that sticks to traditions.
