This weekend in order to get some welding practice, I made a trellis for my Moms garden. The trellis was made out of iron rebar leftover from our neighbor's pool construction. I laid the many pieces of rebar into angular designs on the pavement and in order to provide a stable base, I decided to mount the trellis on an old relater sign. Once I laid out the design I wanted to construct, I began to arc weld the trellis together. Using a plasma cutter Mark and I cut out flowers and attached them to many of the trellis's joints. This increased the strength and reliability of the trellis's joints. The trellis is made up of many triangles at the base in order to help support the rest of the structure. About an hour and a half after we initially laid out the design, it was all welded together and ready to be planted in the garden.

  • You just touch the electrode to the metal. We recently bought a MIG welder with a trigger that feeds the wire and its a lot easier.

  • when welding...can you actually see what your doing with the mask on? what does it look like?

  • The mask I use auto darkens when it senses the bright ark. Once the mask darkens it gets hard to see your piece in its entirety but the area where you are welding is light up by the arc.

  • My friend drew a penis on the wall of his tech ed room with an arc welder. Been up there for a year.

  • No, the entire rod will not get hot, even during long welds. Just don't get your finger near the tip!

  • Wen I first try that kind of stick it scared the crap out me cuz is to loud

  • @morgan2478 You can see it pretty clearly thru the mask though it looks very dimmed. Like a darken video. Good welding masks have also delay time and sensitivity. An electronic LCD mask dims triggered by the light sensor in front of the mask. Good masks give you the ability to delay the dimming of the LCD on your mask and even reduce/inrease its sensitivity to the arc light. Simple masks are just a piece of tempered glass but you have whatsoever no control over it.

  • @morgan2478 its probly the coolest thing when ur doing it haha...first time i did it didnt have the auto darkening helment so u just line it up put ur mask down and hopefully still strike in the same spot...but it suprises u when u get the strike...and u just see the melting metal and a bright light...and a little of the surrounding metal

  • doesnt your habd get hot

  • @JACK9519 you put the electrode to the metal no trigger.

  • do you just touch the electrode to the metal or is there a trigger like on a mig?
