@jsrnf I'm still a rookie but here's my 2 cents, from what I've seen there are several ways to punch the holes in leather. There are punches available that can be used to make multiple holes at once. Al Stohlman recommends using an awl and punching the individual holes right before making the stitch, and most interesting (to me anyway) is I've seen some people use a drill press with a very small bit to make the holes after using a over stitch wheel to mark the locations. Get the hand stitching kit from Tandy, great value love mine.It has tools, Al Stohlman's book and thread.
Buy some leather scraps while you are at it and go to town!!
