It's not "tragic". He gets the girl at the end! This is an unappreciated classic film. Mercedes is amazing. Jeff is even better. And this is Robin Williams' best performance ever. What's tragic is "Tideland". Wtf?? If you love TFK, you'd probably like K-Pax with Jeff and Kevin Spacey too.
