An introduction to the rhythm bones.
A few things I forgot/ didn't have time to put in:
These bones don't explode. They are not made from stegosauri.
Bones were originally made from actual bones (hence the name), and still today are often made from cow rib or shin bones.
Percy Danforth is the man largely responsible for re-popularizing the bones in the 20th century. They had died down after the notorious minstrel shows, but Percy learned to play in 1909 and taught thousands of people until his death in 1992.
The bones tradition is still alive today with folks like Don Flemmings of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Jonathon Danforth (Percy's grandson), and many more.
My bones are $40 per pair. Each pair comes with an instruction sheet and a story of that individual pair. The stories include the type of wood, where it was harvested, how it will sound, and some embellishments (Fun fact: 90% of the wood I harvest comes with complications, including getting kidnapped by aliens, sucked into international conspiracies, and encountering mutant chimpanzees with banana laser guns.)
I also lead bones playing workshops. Contact me at stegrhythmbones@gmail.com to book a workshop or order bones.
Ari, this is wonderful!!

I've played bones for a few months. I play many instruments, but I'm completely hooked on bones. They're the most portable instrument that I've played. I've made many pairs and even a few sets. It never struck me to whittle. I'm off on a search for the perfect heartwood.
Thank you.
