• Thomas Quasthoff, a classically trained bass-baritone from Germany, one of the best at performing Bach and Schubert, has immersed himself in the African American musical literature to such a point that there is hardly any difference in his phrasing to that of an African American. His Swing Low Sweet Chariot version of that "Negro" Spiritual is proof of that. To sing African American music well, one has to understand rejection, pain and hurt, and Quasthoff can surely identify with them.

This man is a unique talent, besides being one of this world's true heroes. What a fascinating person he is! Equally at home with classical and gospel music. I admire him very much.
