  • Another thing that was really impressive was the storm surge..The ocean literally "bulged" up, the surface of the ocean itself seemed to rise up. There were many sailboats left 75yards or more inland. There was even a huge steel hulled Coast Guard cutter that was tossed onto the waterfront hwy....This was my first hurricane so I had no fear. I was running around the courtyards of the Hotel 1829 checking out the show having a good old time!...Then the next day I saw all the damage...ouch...

  • They are not exactly tornadoes in the eye wall. What they are are "miniswirls". These also occurred in Hurricane Andrew and were responsible for the majority of the damage in South Florida. The winds in these miniswirls can be significantly higher than the maximum sustained winds. In addition, the winds in the mountains can be as much as 10% higher than at the surface

A marginal 3 can produce winds in the miniswirls in the mountains over 150 mph

  • when you see a 2x4 sticking THROUGH a coconut tree you know there were some brutal winds

  • When the sun came up and the storm died down I walked around with a buddy and we video taped the destruction of downtown St Thomas. I gotta get that thing on disk then post it.

  • Mr Witt (FEMA director at the time)sat me down many times during his week stay at my hotel and interviewed myself and some of the others about their experience. I asked why in some areas all the trees had been laid down or sheared off all facing one way, but right on the other side of the street the all the trees were laid down or sheared off in a different direction? He explained that do to the mountainous terrain the hurricane spun off many small tornadoes resulting in the extreme winds 175+

  • I am a meteorologist with an M.S. degree from the University of Miami in 2007. I have looked at some of the aircraft data and can say with 100% certainty that Marilyn was in no way a cat 5. The flight level winds do however, suggest category 3 intensity. The official cat 2 is likely low and I'd expect this to be corrected once the reanalysis project reaches 1995.

Winds were likely 115 mph, but 175 is totally off the mark and is not supported by any data

  • I road the storm out on St Thomas in the Hotel 1829 with the owner and his family and a young honeymooning couple from Canada. The storm was MUCH worse than the media was allowed to report. The FEMA bosses stayed with us at the 1829 after the storm and I was the one waiting on them hand and foot so I heard it all...Marilyn was a Cat 4 for about 5 hours and peaked at 175mph+, over 100 killed.

  • 3:13 was Super Typhoon Oscar.

  • My name is Marilyn!

  • Who is the OCM in the beginning part of this clip?
