We are raising our son bilingual (German and English) because he's from a bilingual family. This is SO important to me because I want him to be aware fo his dual culture, I want him to be able to commicate with all family members and I don't want to withold this great opportunity from him.
@enter19 Alot of people are like that, thing is many have a huge preferenee/are more comfortable using one language, and use others when really needed, so you may hardly hear them speak another language. Even just understanding a language is even good. but. Everyone should speak the language in which they are most comfortable in. But there seem to be people who are judgemental about this..
Learning more than one language is good, so you can use it when it's really necessary. I know three languages, English, Spanish, and an Indian language spoken by my parents..but I only use Spanish and the Indian language only when required to speak to those who have no knoweledge of English..other than that, I speak only English the rest of the time.
I agree that speaking more than one language is beneficial...but to mandate it is something else and is certainly an agenda of a political dictatorship. It is meant to subjugate one or more groups of individuals in favour of another by use of language and culture. I have seen it destroy the fabric of Canada and I have also come to see how it is destroying the fabric of the United States. If learning a language is beneficial, most will do it without provocation.
I interpreted like two as referring to bilingual individuals ability to access more than one linguistic community. Also, myself & the video poster are from the United States. We've different heated debates on bilingualism. Neither of us recommend two-language national identity formation (which seems to be your concern as a Canadian). Political implications of bilingualism vary by nation & region. Your political position doesn't invalidate potential benefits of bilingualism in other contexts.
You obviously did not understand the meaning of my post. Saying a person is "like two" is like saying "more than one" or "better". Learn to read between the lines. You say "don't be so defensive"...but you clearly have no idea how this bilingual farce and political engineering has ruined the careers of thousands upon thousands of English Canadians. Look, I know exactly by your tone and your rhetoric that you are a product of the "immersion generation". I've seen it many times. It is sad.
No one in the video said that knowledge of two languages makes them "superior over others," so don't be so defensive. The participants are describing situations in which there is an obvious and practical benefit to knowing two languages fluently. Also, if you "can barely express yourself in English," you aren't bilingual, anymore than my studying French and Mandarin makes me trilingual. Claims to the contrary are irrelevant to the arguments made in this video.
Bilingualism is important, as it reinforces bonds between different people.
International tensions are largely due to linguistic barriers.
The Romans understood this, and did not force their language on their conquered countries. Soviet Russians on the other hand were resented by their non-Russian republics, their unilingual policy being one of the main reasons.
