"Money for Nothing" is a song recorded by British group Dire Straits, which first appeared on their 1985 album Brothers in Arms and subsequently became an international hit when released as a single. It peaked at number one for three weeks in the United States, becoming their most successful single, and also peaked at number one for three weeks on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart. In the band's native UK, the song peaked at number 4. The recording was notable for its controversial lyrics, groundbreaking music video and a cameo appearance by Sting singing the song's falsetto introduction and backing chorus, "I want my MTV". The video was also the first to be aired on MTV Europe when the network started on August 1, 1987.

  • oh and by the way....FAGGOT.

  • I agree, if you don't like how the artist wrote the song then don't listen to it. Its THEIR creation. The original is what I grew up listening to and its what I will die listening to. If you're bitching about it then you better not be watching cable TV either.

  • @mjn76 Blame the networks. Hell, they even censor it on radio stations, so the real blame goes to the record company.

  • Whoever mangled this song by censoring an entire verse should truly be ashamed. THERE WAS A REASON for using the word "faggot" in the song. Knopfler was portraying a blue collar, uneducated person looking down on the music industry and wealth generally. Such a person WOULD use slurs like "faggot." But who cares about artistic integrity when certain corporate cowards fret over the sensitivities of the P.C. zombies?

  • wait so we can have songs about black people raping women and using the N word, but we can't have the word faggot in classic 80s song?

  • I want music on my MTV

  • I want my MTV..........

  • Hard to believe the effects in this video were cutting edge at the time. I can remember people marveling over how " High Tech " this video was. And yes, they use to play the "faggot" verse on the air and it wasn't a big deal.
