Derek Brown is a young San Antonio artist who has a strong ability in both hand-worked and digital media, with an innate capacity for merging the two.
In the spring of 2007, Austrian artist Heimo Wallner was brought to visit to the UTSA Department of Art & Art History by Ken Little.
Although Wallner's primary medium is drawing, as demonstrated in his installation at Satellite Space in March, he has extended this practice into animation. Wallner's work, while aesthetically dissimilar, inspired Derek's silent animation project.
Characteristic of Derek's work is a relaxed facility with materials, seen herein through a declaration of the paper's edge, as well as a frame or two of various interruptions incidental to the recording (a cat, a hand). The piece reads as a painting in motion that progresses through various geometries and compositions, repeating itself in positive and negative color cycles.
