Orphan Excursion Sponsorship Program
This excursion was sponsored by the Shirak Swedish Armenian Union www.shirak.se, for the orphans with special needs at the Kharbert Home for Special Children.
More than 1,200 children live in one of Armenia's 15 orphan facilities. While these orphanages provide basic care for these children, limited funding does not permit these children to tour Armenia and visit and participate in various social and cultural activities as regular children.
Sponsorship for excursions cost between $200 and $1,000 per group of approximately 20 children and relevant care staff. Age appropriate outings can be planned and implemented year round. Some potential destinations include:
• Trips to an amusement park—This excursion would include bus transportation to a local amusement park for a couple of hours, rides and snacks. 20 children and relevant care staff would participate. The short-term impact of this project would be wonderful memories for 20 orphans, economic support for a bus driver, economic support for the amusement park and food vendors. Cost: $200-$300
• Trips to a museum—This excursion would include bus transportation to a museum for a couple of hours, admission and snacks following the visit. 20 children and relevant care staff would participate. The short-term impact of this project would be the educational and social benefits for 20 orphans, economic support for a bus driver, economic support for the museum and food vendors. Cost: $200-$300
• Trips to a popular concert—This excursion would include bus transportation to a concert for a couple of hours, admission and snacks following the visit. 20 children and relevant care staff would participate. The short-term impact of this project would be the social benefits for 20 orphans, economic support for a bus driver and food vendors. Cost: $500-$1,000 (depending on ticket pricing)
• Ski trips to Tsaknadzor—This excursion would include bus transportation to Tsaknadzor for the day, equipment rental, lift ticket and admission and snacks and lunch during the visit. 15 children and relevant care staff would participate. The short-term impact of this project would be the social benefits for 15 orphans, economic support for a bus driver, the ski area and food vendors. Cost: $750-1,000
• Trips to bring orphans with disabilities to Yerevan for "mainstream activities" —This excursion would include bus transportation to Yerevan for a couple of hours and snacks during the visit. 20 children and relevant care staff would participate. The short-term impact of this project would be the educational and social benefits for 20 orphans, the societal benefit of mainstream activities (long term impact), economic support for a bus driver, economic support for markets or food vendors. Cost: $200-$300
• Trips to monuments and churches throughout Armenia—This excursion would include bus transportation to a monument or church for a couple of hours, admission and snacks following the visit. 20 children and relevant care staff would participate. The short-term impact of this project would be the educational and social benefits for 20 orphans, economic support for a bus driver, economic support for the destination and food vendors. Cost: $300-$400
