Philippe Jaroussky, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Ensemble Matheus (dir. Jean-Christophe Spinosi) performing excerpts from Vivaldi's Stabat Mater to be released soon on Naive Classique. WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES.
Extroverted, emphatic, yes --but not an egotist. As far as I'm concerned, he's getting some very dolce sounds here, so he can do whatever he damn-well pleases with the stick. Perhaps one might do well to listen the ears, rather than the eyes...
Enrico Onofri has a similarly naïve baton technique... Is he, too, fulfilling "his own ego." If you've met him, you know the answer to that!
Do we not run the risk of being a bit sophomoric...
I think there is no need to perform this music with a conductor. A first violin or harpsichordist who leads is more than enough... but if Spinosi really needs to conduct (with symphonic orchestras techniques), probably to fulfill his own ego, then please do it without the stick!
I love this guys.. Philippe J.is my favorite contratenor singer.. ;)

Spinosi has never struck me as an egotist.
