Explains how to fix a carriage jam (also called a carriage stall) on the HP Photosmart C4200, C4300, C4400, and C4500 printers.

The printer shown in this video is an HP Photosmart C4280, but the steps are the same if your printer is an HP Photosmart C4200, C4300, C4400, or C4500.

I am an HP employee but I do not represent HP on this site.

  • You should talk slower, and explain how to do a test page more often. I think some people really need slower instruction.

    Getting the sarcasm?

  • @izzirf Hmmm. It's tough to make something that's optimal for everybody. We'll keep working on improving these. Thank you for the feedback.

  • "Gently but firmly, push it straight in until it pops into place" That's what she said :P

Anway, the problem I'm having with My C4280 is that the cartridge cradle won't move. It moves easily when I push it with my hand, but the printer won't move it. After I did the hard reset, it says it's a 'Paper Jam', when it's clearly not. The printing software still says cartridge can't move. It worked fine the other night. What should I do?

  • Verify that there is nothing obstructing the carriage and use a flashlight to look on the right and left side of the printer for paper. If there is nothing in the carriage path and you are still receiving the same error, your printer likely needs some kind of service. You can contact HP to see what the support options are for your printer.

  • Hi!this is very useful Video!!thanks!but while cartridges are moving it makes strange noise and moving with difficulties. What should I do? help me!!

  • If you have verified that there are no obstructions in the carriage path and that the ink cartridges are seated correctly and you are still having problems, your printer likely needs some kind of service. You can contact HP to see what the support options are for your printer.

  • "you might have to be forceful" just had to be sure I wasn't going to break it, and sure enough it worked. Thank yooouuuu

  • @Btroisi13 I have the same problem, but I have a C4580. The printer says it has a paper jam. I tried everything this video said and I tried everything in the how to fix the paper jam video. NOTHING WORKED. I looked inside the rollers front and back and nothing. It still gives me that paper jam error. Also like you when I open the cartridge door, the cartridge holders won't move to the far right. And NO there is nothing in its path. It easily moves when I push with my hand. So HELP!!!!

  • The hard reset worked for me! Thanks.

  • @izzirf You know this is YouTube so you can pause or replay the video if you don't understand something...

  • help full

  • Thanks for the tutorial. None of these steps solved the problem. Given that this printer has given me trouble since day one, "Your printer likely needs some type of service," to my ears, means, "Next time, buy Canon." Thanks anyway, HP.

  • SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HELPFUL!!!!!!!!! I HAD A PAPER DUE TODAY AND THANKS TO YOU IT'S ON TIME!

  • perfect tutorial . thank u!

  • Ah thanks

  • The "moving the cradle manually" helped fix my problem.

BTW does your 4500 printer make unusual collision type noises when starting up everytime ?
