Rent stabilization laws in New York City, have been weakened due to legislation changes, that have taken place under Mayor Koch, Governor Pataki, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Community crushing development under Mayor Mike Bloomberg are chasing average people out of New York City. Upper lower class, Lower middle class people can no longer get affordable housing, to live here. Laws have been changed to weaken rent stabilization laws. Vacancy Decontrol, Luxury Decontrol. Grants being handed out to landlords with provisions to raise rents to skyhigh levels. Personal use evictions where a landlord can empty a whole rent stabilized building, saying they need it for themselves. Vacancy Decontrol, Luxury Decontrol laws enacted to let landlords raise rents to astronomical high sky high levels. Under the Community Crushing Development that has taken place under Mayor Mike Bloomberg Communitys like the Lower East Side are becoming unrecognizable. NYU trying to swallow the whole East Village, pratically everything under 14th street. It is a hungry monster, that just keeps gulping land, that could be used for apartments for average people to live here. NYU should have their campus on Governors Island. Crooked housing Judges, that ignore merits of rent stabilization laws, to rule on the side of landlords, developers. Legislative changes need to be made to reverse this. Stronger Rent Stabilization laws have to be made.

  • I can't understand why new yorkers dont go to jersey city or newark , or paterson .... New york is overcrowded... I am sorry the city/landlord did that to you.. The same thing is happening in washington dc. poor people forced out into other counties. it's a housing war on the poor and middle class ... really who can buy a 1 br apt for 300,000, not the average person... or a 2br for 400,000 + condo fees as high as 900 a month...

  • It is very unfair, being forced out of New York. Rent control laws need to be strenghtened not weakened. Mike Bloomberg is a con man. He talked about affordable housing, which is why I voted for him a second term. He is a con man. All that has went up is Luxury Condos, Luxury Apartment buildings for the rich. Housing urban development giving grants with the purpose of weakening rent control. Vacancy Decontrol, Luxury Decontrol needs to be abolished. For sure personal use evictions.

  • There is nothing "unfair" about an area becoming wealthier and poorer people no longer being able to afford it. Artificially "stabilizing" rents at low levels in order to prevent the city from developing is unfair to the city and to the people who want a better life, and not live in a slum. Progress can't be stopped to cater to those too weak to keep up.
