What about a compromise between the two camps, e.g. Mr. Dawkins could accept that the Earth is only 10000 years old, but evolved by evolution. Maybe an interesting theory both sides could live with. I shall write a book about it.

I loved Dawkins' comment on "no punctuation at all in that one!"

Well, my assumption was that the gist of the joke was understood by everyone, even if they didn't know the specific reference.

so funny how we do that isn't it.
especially obvious in standup acts, the comic, if he starts of well, "has" the crowd, and then goes through his content.
each of the jokes of funny comments end with a certain subtle pause at which time the audience has found out that it is funny, and they laugh no matter if they figure it out or not.
in order not to look the fool for not getting it :)

I didnt get the david kevin joke
When Dawkins was reading the e-mails it made me laugh so hard because it was the classic babble of the fundamentalist

After a bit of googling I have found out that Michelangelo's David is situated in Florence. Presumably the hero of the book went to florence to see Michelangelo's Kevin as a result.
I don't think he finished the joke since the audience began to laugh and Dawkins paused to say, "I see you are ahead of me". I suspect a proportion of the audience may laughed out of herd instinct having missed the joke as well!
