Here is the Rocktron Maxe Guitar Preamp. The is preamp has the most brutal distortion! It is a "tone monster"! Why? Do you love DISTORTION? It has absolutely BRUTAL distortion! The EQ is VERY responsive and works in conjunction with the built-in aural exciter. When going for a tone you need to adjust the eq section and the "phase" and "mix" knobs of the exciter together. It also has built-in Hush Noise Reduction that is fully adjustable.

Here is my signal chain:

1976 Gibson "The Paul" LesPaul (EMG-85 bridge pickup) into Rocktron Maxe into Zoom G1 (for delay and reverb only) into Aux In (6V6 power amp section) of Crate Stealth 50 watt 112 combo amp.

The guitar riff is Whitesnake's "Still of the Night".

  • I have found that many "solid state" (transistor-based) guitar preamps can a produce a really brutal, crushing distortion tone that still has an "organic" feel.... IF.... you run them hot enough (output gain cranked) into a "tube" power amp and then into a really great speaker/cabinet. This way, you introduce that wonderful saturated power tube compression into your distortion tone. Finally, this great tone needs to be translated into the world of sound via a great speaker system. :)

  • Thats a great tone, lemme just get this straight, are you connecting the output of your Rocktron to the Crate 50watt amp Return? also are you using any poweramps to run the preamp to the combo?

  • Sorry for the confusion. I am running the Maxe preamp into the Crate Stealth 112 combo via the "aux in" jack on the front. Doing this bypasses the Crate's regular preamp section (accessed via the standard imput jack). This way, the Rocktron Maxe acts as the guitar preamp section and goes directly into the Crate's built in power amp section (6V6 tubes) then out through the speaker.

  • Ive talked to John Sikes tech, and he says uses very little effects, his tech says John has super strong hands and what sounds like a chorus effect is more of him just doing a vibrato of the whole chords.

  • I have come to really dislike these EMG pickups! I don't think I care for HOT (high output pickups) anymore. I'm currently looking for some pickups in the 6K Ohm variety.

  • geez thats a bad sound, might not be the pre amp, crappy pickups

  • how much gain/treble/mids/bass do you use on that setting?

  • I had one-didn't care much for it. It's hard to beat a good tube pre!

  • hey man gud wrk bt cn u tel me what was da patch level set on zoom g1

  • just get a good tube amp like a Mesa or ENGL-done

  • add some more reverb and youve got it my friend.

  • hey daddy thanks for my new youtube acount.

  • Great tone for it's intended use. Although I run a Marshal JMP-1 now, I can't sell my Pro G.A.P. because it just does that mid sustaining growl so well. Thanx for posting!
