A harsh military regime in 1976 came to power. In an effort to rid the nation of terrrorism, thousands of innocent people vanished.20-30 thousand. There were about 300 dention centers where people were tortured and vanished. Some were dropped into the sea from helicopters.. People were tortured with cattle prods. Regime tried to take over British held islands and lost their grip of power. Democracy returned in 1983. Military tried until 1990 amnesty.
