Observations of very distant exploding stars show that the expansion of the Universe is now speeding up, rather than slowing down due to gravity as expected. Over the largest distances, our Universe seems to be dominated by a repulsive "dark energy" of unknown origin that stretches the very fabric of space itself faster and faster with time.

Alex Filippenko (NAS), University of California, Berkeley, was a member of both teams that discovered in 1998 the accelerating expansion of the Universe, driven by "dark energy."

  • "'cosmic jerk' that reversed the universe" xD

  • @spikell70 and @urcorrect I think we know very well that we know absolutely nothing about dark energy. What it is, how it will change in the future, why it's pushing, (or pulling) the expansion of the universe, how it's gravity might affect the expansion if it stopped pushing... Einstein was an agnostic, which meant that he knew he didn't know, and everything to do with this subject is religious, not scientific at this point.

  • @SocialPromotionTips your brain went into a big crunch

  • Your Video Is Very Useful Sharing Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe

  • You need to look at my channel. Proof of no expansion, no big bang, no dark energy. All based on dark matter having a index of refraction. When people look back on talks like this they will have a laugh.

  • ALEX FILLIPENKO!!!

  • @SocialPromotionTips Are you hiding?

  • @XTSonic bar? thats not what i have heard, this is a picture that comes to mind when i picture our own.

  • 3:40 I thought our Milky Way was established to be a spiral bar galaxy??

  • @mrlogicalman1 Oh, come on. I had a pretty good laugh when I read his comment. My favorite part was the electron collapsing into the nucleus and forming a "black hole atom".

  • retard there was no light in the universe until 380,000yrs after big bang . not few seconds after like this socialpromotiontips guy says what a retard

  • It's not dark energy pushing the expansion of the universe, it's light. Particles pushed out by burning stars. We are still getting light from a few seconds after the big bang. Solar winds. When all of the light is sucked in by black holes, gravity will take over. Dark matter is cold matter, as heat gives off light. No heat, the electron collapses into the nucleus, and it becomes a black hole atom. I know how the universe will end, it will end in a big crunch, the same way it always has.

  • This guy is brilliant, ,,,,,,anyone Lawrence Krauss respects is an authority on the subject.

27:18 The "take thousands of photographs (through the telescope) and examine them and simply look for arrows" comment is truly clever. Almost British humor.

  • @torymorton I love you so much right now :(

  • @1Novatrek lmfao.... butt buddies probably says it best, they dont know that they have more in common then they want to admit, unstoppable force meets immovable object.

  • @gsmonks Hey fag, you must've missed reading "Youtube Etiquette 101". Spamming is looked down upon. I had to go through three pages of you and your butt buddys inane chatter to find a comment left by someone else.

  • @gsmonks You have got to be kidding me when you say lots of people speak using perfect grammar. I've never met anyone who speaks perfectly, especially since your definition of perfect grammar factors in the pronunciation of "the". Also, since "communication" is the point of grammar, will saying "the" correctly improve his communication? Does "the universe" instead of "the universe" communicate better, somehow? It doesn't make him more effective or more engaging, just more "perfect".

  • "Knowing the difference can be a game-changer in life." I don't need a lesson on life. Try to be less didactic and philosophical.

  • I like the SUBJECT of this video very much, by the way. I've watched it several times, now. I just wish the speaker would work on his delivery.

  • @gobipill 1- No, the point of speaking is communication.

2- Lots of people speak using flawless grammar.

3- Pronunciation is not what we're talking about here. We're talking about a lazy, bad habit.

4- Citing that there are "other videos" is irrelevant, and is like saying in a court of law, "Other people have done far worse things than my client, so you should prosecute them instead."

5- You're making excuses, not arguments. Knowing the difference can be a game-changer in life.

  • @gsmonks Whatever. I can't think up more to say, so here's a summary of all I've said. Take it however you like.

    1. His grammar is coherent. Coherence, not perfection, is the point of speaking

    2. This is speaking, not writing. No one speaks with perfect grammar

    3. The pronunciation of words varies from accents and dialects

    4. There are tons of other videos to criticize

  • @gobipill No, the point of speaking is communication. As an educator he owes it to his students to set an example, especially considering that words are the means by which he imparts information.

This is not an example of "accents and dialects".

Videos come by number, not by weight.

"Other videos" are irrelevant to this particular example, just as are other speakers.

"Thuh" before a vowel is wrong, AND for teaching purposes is therefore inadequate. They are one and the same.

That's all I have to say, really. Also, I don't think you honestly believe that his speaking "doesn't cut it" for his students. You went from "'the' is pronounced wrong" to "his speaking is inadequate". That's ridiculous.

  • @gobipill As an educator, he has the responsibility to set an example. "Good enough to understand" doesn't cut it. You can jump up and down shouting, "Ugh! Ugh!" and point vigorously to indicate you want something, but as I say, "Good enough to understand" doesn't cut it.

The fact that this is the Internet is a poor excuse. Just because many people talk like louts doesn't mean you have to join in. Lots of people get drunk and piss in doorways, too.

  • @gsmonks The main reason I commented in the first place was b/c this dude's grammar is more than good enough to understand. It might not be perfect, but neither, without a doubt, is yours. Further, there are tons of other videos on YouTube in desperate need of your "skills"; go there. I used to think grammar was important too, until I realized, "oh sht, dis is the internet lololol who am I kidding". I used to be just like you. Then I loosened up and took an arrow in the knee.
