a Mike Johnson Yodelin' Song: "T-Shirt Yodel" * Bowery Poetry Club NY

7 May 2005, Mike Johnson performs his most popular yodeling song at Bart Plantenga's yodel book lecture at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York, sharing the stage with Yodelers Randy Erwin and Lynn Book. Erwin is the yodeling voice in Disney's animated movie "HOME ON THE RANGE." Plantenga is a DJ, music historian and author of the 2004 best seller "Yodel-Ay-Eee-Ooo, The Secret History of Yodeling Around The World."

This is Johnson's first official appearance following his November 2003 spinal cord injury when three of his neck vertebrae collapsed.

His song "Yeah I'm A Cowboy" is on Plantenga's "Rough Guide To Yodel" CD along with the songs of 17 other world famous Yodelers. The CD was released in September 2006 by the World Music Network in London-UK, and is available from Amazon.com and numerous Internet sites.

Mike wrote the "T-Shirt Yodel" back in June 1988 in response to the many comments he was getting about his official T-Shirt which reads "Mike Johnson Black Yodel No.1, Country Music's No.1 Black Yodeler." Even after reading this someone would invariably ask him "Do you really yodel?"

Johnson has written more yodeling songs than anyone, and his Yodel Song Archives, containing 114 yodeling songs written & composed by him, are in the Recorded Sound Reference Center's permanent music preservation collection at the Library of Congress.

Mike Johnson is an inducted member of America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame. His "T-Shirt Yodel" song is available on Roughshod Records "Mike Johnson Yodeling 40 Years" CD a 2-disc set featuring 50 yodeling songs written and composed by him.

Definitely have to practice. I get kinda lazy in that department sometimes, and it will show. speaking of "practice" check out my friend "Zack Taylor Mr. Lightning Fingers" on my channel. Sadly, he passed away about a month or two ago.

Sorry! I totally missed what you wrote! I'm even more impressed now! Keep up the great work! Yeah, I have to be careful when I do the Rodgers yodel. If I try to hit an octave too high or too rapidly) it hurts my vocal chords. I also have to warm up a lot. I probably couldn't do it right now, cause I haven't done it for a while. Hafta get back into the swing of it! :)

Did you read the "more info" section on the right? I was on a mission to prove that I could still do it following the 2003 collapse of 3 of my neck vertebrae on my spinal cord.

Rodgers basically did "double" yodels. They are easier on the throat. It's very important to find your vocal range, otherwise you can severely damage your vocal cord.

Great job mike! I liked it better than the "Wild Horse Yodel" (it seemed like you weren't hitting the octaves as high on that one). Still, swiss/alpine yodeling is hard. I can't do it! I can do "Rogers style" okay, but Rodgers style uses a lot of eee's and few ohh's. (I can't hit the ohhh's). Keep up the great work!
