I wouldn't say that LotR is fairy tale, even compared to The Witcher. I've read both and I like both series.
LotR was just written in more... elegant way, focuses on different things. You couldn't write about sex and killing in such way back there, as Sapkowski did it.
Anyway, both series are great, that cannot be denied ;)
