You could get water to bead that well on an unwaxed car if the paint is properly cleaned. i.e. Wash it, clay it, and then use a paint cleaner like Deep Crystal #1 or even Scratch X 2.0... Once you have a smooth, swirl-free finish, water will bead even if unwaxed.
@NETWizzJbirk Yeah I already did that stuff but the wax leaves that layer of protection from the UV rays and salt, road debris and all that other garbage. I can just spray the car down with a hose and it will be sparking clean again.
