When the first Fairtrade sugar became available from the Kasinthula Cane Growers Association (KCGA) in Malawi, it was packaged under The Co-operative brand. The vast majority of The Co-operative sugar comes from the KCGA and is bought under Fairtrade terms. The switch of our entire own-brand sugar range to Fairtrade has brought a much-needed boost to the 300 farmers and their communities. The KCGA sugar is also used as an ingredient in The Co-operative Truly Irresistible Fairtrade chocolate bar range, some of our cakes, biscuits, and our organic ale.
Malawi

For the communities of the KCGA, every grain of sugar makes a difference. By buying The Co-operative Fairtrade sugar, our customers have helped provide life's basics -- housing, electricity and water -- to thousands of the poorest people in the world. The Co-operative has recently pledged additional support. We're investing in a project to further assist the 10,000 people living in the Kasinthula area, focussing on: sanitation, hygiene training and education, installing efficient cooking stoves, launching a tree planting programme and constructing and refurbishing 30 water points.

Zambia

We haven't stopped there, we've recently started sourcing sugar from Zambia, where we will be working with the Kaleya Fairtrade co-operative.

  • The well water is the big problem. After a few years of pumping the area will become an arid region. Starvation is always the outcome of these situations. The cooperative knows this and still exploits the worlds fresh water supply. You 300 farmers: grow food for yourselves and forget the money. If you conserve your fresh water supply by non exportation and no well drilling. You will live in the balance and possibly survive the global famine that is becoming epidemic.

  • The Co-op should show this as an advert on t.v.: the impact would be enormous!

It would win more customers than the usual offer-focused adverts.

    Be brave, try it.
