My animation demo that I did as my ending project for my school. This is the beginning of the animated short film. I used rotoscope technique and also cutout animation. The softwares I used were PhotoShop, Freehand, Director and Premiere.

I was inspired by the movie Fire and Ice by Ralph Bakshi and the TV-series Samurai Jack.

The hero is an outcast tribesman and he's trying to hunt for food but fails by accident. He is then attacked by a giant beetle.

The pterodactyl is admittedly a bit long and boring but that's where the credits would have been :)

This was supposed to be about a 15-20 minutes long animation where the hero found a small civilized Romanesque town and got himself into serious trouble and ofcourse saving an innocent girl in the process :D

I'm now convinced that I won't continue with this project and I'm on to something better.

Give honest feedback and please rate the video! Thanks.

  • Thanks for the comments :). This is not a complete story by it self but only a small portion from the beginning. The first part of the story is about the hero trying to hunt for meat in vain. Right now I'm working on a short animation story with a lot of action. I have a script and I've designed some of the characters already and I'm working on the storyboard. It'll take a lot of time because I'm doing everything by myself.

  • Wow! this looks great. How come you can't finish? Is your next project going to be rotoscoped as well? Great job. Check out some of my rotoscope work on my site.

  • @kmdki Thanks! It's not that I can't finnish but I won't :D. It was a too ambitious project for one person to do. The next project is going to use some photos (taken by me) as reference in the animation scenes but I won't be doing actual rotoscoping. I'll be sure to check your work too.

  • As a test it shows promise.

As a recommendation, set yourself a target of 5 minutes, and go for painted rotoscoped backgrounds(Artrage, maybe?) and more focus on a human character.

Its just a suggestion, mind you, but I reckon you will surprise yourself by investing more dedication and effort.

  • Thanks for the input! I'm working on a new project now and it'll be about 5 minutes long. I'll have to check out the Artrage :)

  • Thanks :)

I'm working on a new one but my PC doesn't work right now.

  • with the techniques today it would be much easier to animate return of the king...

  • O.K. I am sold were is the rest. You show promise to make the next samurai jack or even the next johnny quest if you put your mind to it. I was kind of hoping for more of a climatic ending though like the man stabing the beetle instead of dropping his balls and running but hey still badass

  • hey, that's some pretty cool animation and some good sound effects :)
