For the first time in Kwa-Zulu Natal the introduction of a specialised GPS unit, developed by a company called Protagtor, was utilised in the plight to save the Somkhanda Rhino spurred by the two white rhino poaching incidents at the end of 2010. The unit was placed into the horn and relays information on the tagged animal every 60 seconds, the tracking technology is designed to give essential early warning on potential poaching occurrences by noting irregular movements of the animal.
