Saakashvilli did not start the war. He responded to the attacks from the breakaway regions. The BBC did a report which showed that Saakashvilli warned these regions to stop firing rockets or they will protect the people of Georgia. Does anyone else think something's funny with how fast the Russians were able to enter Georgia? Not the breakaway regions but Georgia. This was planned at the outset. Saakashvilli was goaded into attacking so the Russians would have a reason to invade.

OK, Obama maybe is shading the truth here. But his original statement was correct. Mikheil Saakashvili started this war and gave the Russians an excuse to, well, act like Russians. And John McCain was one of Misha's "friends" in Washington who helped convince Misha that the US would back him in his rash action. Obama's initial statement reflected all of this.
