Royal Garden Blues -- Carlings 1991
The Carling Family are performing in Norway at the 1991 Molde Jazz Festival.
In the classic Royal Garden Blues composed by Clarence Williams the Carlings approach in the manner Louis Armstrong did it with his All Stars in Italy in 1955 issued on the LP Ambassodor Satch.
Since the the fifties this has been for me one of the most exciting Armstrong discs. So, I was surprised to see any band band ever to play it with that same fire Louis did. and.... The Carlings did.
Father Hans has learned and feels that Armstrong approach in the ensemble work, and in his solo is his own man.
Son Max on clarinet has the technique and the knowledge to do all the Edmund Hall licks and Gunhild on trombone, she is now 16 year old, plays in a Trummy Young style that I have seen many trombonists try to do, but Gunhild does it better than anyone. Just listen to the ending after the drum tag. Pianist Gerd does her solo in an exciting and hard swinging stride way. Even 12 year old Ulf on drums plays already in a mature manner. This is talent folks!. Totally amazing.
