    This particular performance of this tune, I do use a lot of whole tone and augmented sounds throughout, to arrive at some funny notes, as the melody encourages. And I think that is what your ear is picking up on.

    I'm working out of a quartal framework around a C tonal center for the intro. If you want to think of a scale, I suppose you could roughly attribute a dorian scale to what I've done here.

    The spot you're talking about, I continue to work with a motif that ended the last section, consisting of a half step up, and a major 3rd down. It gives the sound of a half diminished chord and perhaps an altered dominant, but this is incidental to the development of the motif.
