They censored out the French soldiers that were guarding the detention centre and also the kepi the one officer was wearing as this came out just as Europe was beginning to look back at the Holocaust and no one (in the gov at least) wanted to admit that anyone besides the German Nazis had played a role in the tragedy. So in order for the film to be shown, the director had to censor those parts else the last 10 minutes wouldn't have been shown or it wouldn't be screen at all. Hope that helps :)
