Well in the third game the enemies are called rhynocs, because they're made in the image of the sorceress, who is a rhinoceros. The riptoc was used in the 4th game Enter the Dragonfly, and that was all Universal's idea since Insomniac was out of the picture by then.

@HyperGolem Yes. But a Riptoc is like a fictional dinosaur. Even at the end of Spyro Enter the Dragonfly, after Spyro beats Ripto, Spyro makes mention that Ripto's spells don't work properly because magic and dinosaurs don't mix.
