these are a domesticated breed called the african pygmy hedgehog, they're quite different from wild ones.

lol, you buy them from a petstore or breeder (breeder would be better), they aren't as wild as you think either (if bought, not found..), mine acts like a puppy xD

You just have to be careful in your aproach. Pick him up from below with a scooping motion, don't grab and you'll be fine.
