Recently my wife and I found a plan for creating a dog waste compost system. We have two 60 pound dogs that generate a lot of waste and we began to wonder if there was a way to compost their waste instead of throw it into the garbage. American dogs and cats generate 10 million tons of waste every year, most of which is thrown into the trash and then winds up in landfills and never actually decomposes.

This is our attempt to reduce our contribution to landfills. To get more ideas about things you can do to take greater personal responsibility for the environment visit www.lowcarbonhome.info

since leachants are possible, it is advised not to site the trashcan near the foundation of your house as it appears in this video.

It is actually next to the garage and about 50 feet from the house. Can you say more about about the kind of leachants you are refering to? It is very clay soil and I am told not much leaching takes place in that kind of soil. So far it has worked rather well except that it filled faster than I hoped with two dogs.

Liberal?????????? I am as right winged as they come and I think this is a wonderful idea. Why do people always make personal attacks when they do not agree?

You should use biodegradable doggie bags, and EM1 instead of the 2 other products you used. Also - if you are okay with Vermicomposting, you should use Red Wigglers down there instead of any chemicals. Vermicomposting in this situation looks like it would work, to me.

that's right but it might attract more insects or pests and your plant can be poisoned because of the dog manure because it attracts more pests or more insect

I read somewhere about how it needs to reach a certain temperature to kill off any roundworms/parasites that might be in the dog waste. I wouldn't use it anywhere near edible plants!

Whoa, did you just put that next to your house? Stinky!! Plus, a watery septic system next to the foundation isn't the best idea either.

Cool - I didn't know red worms are able to deal with doggie poo, I've only ever read about them being fed cow/horse manure. Knowing that actually makes the rest of the system described in the vid (sans septic tank chemicals) perfect imo, I think I might give it a try now. :>

Final message - sorry about this lol.

The fact you use your other compost bin to assist is great but instead of that liquid stuff why not have a wormery and every week take a handful of worms and a bit of soil from the garden and you will have all the microbial ingredients you need.

Finally, although its a great alternative it unfortunately doesn't offer an alternative to the plastic. It would still be going to the land fill whether it has crap in it or not unless you wash the used bags lol.
