After getting off Via Rail Train 89 from Toronto at kitchener station, I decided to film the train crossing Weber Street. It was a very cold night. Another night, I saw the same train with a renaaissance car on the back of the train. It was that adapter car Via Rail uses to couple the Renaissance equipment to the Budd park cars on the Ocean Limited. I have no idea why that car was on Train 89.
Via seems to be experimenting with baggage car service which had all but been eliminated in the late 1980s cutback. They now have those renaissance surplus cars which were unfinished and I guess they got Bombardier to plug the windows and turn them into luggage cars with standard couplings and power at one end.
I saw a similar arrangement on a montreal-ottawa train, and I was told that VIA wanted to bring back baggage service on that run.
