"We have to have artists who understand, the community comes first. After all, the place of the artist is to be part of the community. That's an idea I began when I made my decision to become a Chicano artist. I didn't choose to become an artist because I wanted to express myself, or indulge my own curiosity, or to go and have fun, or have a successful career. I got into art because I believed that culture was important. Now more then ever, culture is what I make."
