Plenty of idiots out there who think the best bass is the one who can hit the lowest note. But we should consider, among other things, does he do so with power, volume and versatility? To this end I should like to present three of the biggest low range voices of all time; Maxim Mikhaylov, Mihaly Szekely and Boris Shtokolov.

  • Just imagine one of these resonant opera basses would do a close mic gospelsong.....If they don`t have to care about the volume, just imagine how low they would be able to go. And if they would try a vocal fry too....I`m shure they would do a great job. This basses in the vid are great. Opera and gospel are two very different genres, especially for basses. It´s just a matter of what you expect...

  • True, with gospel its mostly about how low you can go. But with opera there is also the considerations of legato, timbre, diction, dynamics etc. I'm not saying these qualities are not important in the world of gospal singing, but they are MUCH less important than in the opera worlds view. Conversely Opera doesnt place a lot of value on the lowest and highest notes, for a start most roles are written within a 2.5 octave bass - soprano range.

  • I made a video about a year ago to help clear up some of the confusion between the operatic bass voice and the gospel bass voice. Or the liturgical Russian and Tibetan chanters.

Basically an opera bass must be able to sing a solo melody. A gospel bass typically only sings a harmony line or a low riff. Chanters hardly can be said to sing at all.

Opera is like the Decathalon. Gospel is like the shot put. And chanting is like power lifting.

  • I've sung (pure amateur) both with and without mikes. The sound environments are totally different. Before you talk, try and sing in a rock-and-roll sound environment with a tiny voice and see if you are heard, even with a mike. Remember, amplified music CAN affect your mike. Opera singers have way, way more voice than pop singers, but why all the insults?

  • @LeonizerTheHorror ''On a nameless hill'' (In russian ''На безымянной высоте")

  • which is song is Boris Shtokolov singing? i wanna download it but i cant find it anywhere o.o anybody know what it's called?:)

  • Boris Shtokolov is my hands down favorite with all due respect to the other artists. His voice has such expression and beauty. I get chills just listening to him.

  • Hey everyone who thinks opera singers can do what gospel singers with a mic are wrong. These opera singers probably have nothing valuable below G1. To sing like gospel basses one must practice polishing the turd that is the lowest not one can make. Opera isn't about having lungs or big vocal cords, it's about proper technique and projection.

  • They used to make us sing this in the army recruitment just to check we had balls

  • i must say Boris Shtokolov has it all; power, versatility and smoothness. It's a pipe dream, but i'd love to have heard him do a close mic JD's "walk that lonesome road"bet he could hit the holy grail C1 : )

  • jose mardones...my favorite.......

    kevin maynor

  • Jose Mardones isn't in here why?

  • What's the name of the first song?
