One of the US networks also showed this on its evening news. I was only six at the time, but there were only three stations and all of them had news on, so that's what I watched. There was no explanation that it was an April Fool's Day prank, and I believed it. A year or two later, when we were having spaghetti for dinner, I said something about it growing on trees, and the rest of my family just thought I was crazy and wouldn't believe that I'd seen a story about it on the news.
