Not a simple question. I think this is mostly because of the fear. It is a very powerful motivation. Both theists and atheists are implicitly afraid that their views are wrong, since there is no good way to verify those views experimentally. In fact, no one care about who and how created this universe. What people really care abut is death. When one fights someone with alternative ideology he tries to reinforce his own. Consciously or not - does not matter.

Actually it is worse than that even. We can find NO contemporary evidence of any historical "Jesus" existing. There was Appollonius of Tya and a few other real men who undoubtedly had their details affixed to Jesus, as well as several (prior to Jesus) fictional characters which provided the basis (the child born to a virgin who is a messiah and is eventually killed to save humanity was a VERY common theme for hundreds of years prior to X-tianity). No historian mentions observing this Jesus.
