Canada on the Erie shore....they would run a hose out many feet out into the lake and bury the hose with the bucket protecting the hose from unwanted collections. It worked fine.

There is more to water purification than this, this is actually a way to remove sediment like organic materials. Charcoal should also be added, it will remove hazardous chemical compounds that may be present within the water. A good 15 minute boiling of the water after filtration is much safer. Oxygenating the water will help with taste, just pour water back and forth between 2 cups and swallow.
