You can shoot 5.56 out of a Mini 14 just fine. It even says so in the owners manual.
-
the new mini 14s are designed to be able to handle 5.56

What load were you shooting? Commercial .223? M193? M855?
-
wow i wish my 308 was half as powerful as that.

@tjthemadman a 223 delivers less "power" than any of the others mainly because its a smaller diameter and lighter weight bullet the 30-30 probably has the most ft lbs of energy out to about 100 yds the the 270 takes over but your question is sort of apples and oranges because these rounds were meant for different purposes the 30-30 is a brush and close range round while the others are more of a field gun as far as accuracy thats more in the gun and the person behind it and conditions than cal.

@Robbob9933 I'd say it's pretty safe to shoot 5.56 in the Mini 14. If it wasn't safe Ruger wouldn't have put that in the manual. Think about it, it something goes wrong they are liable.

@ih8suvz Never trust the manual. It is the rifle that possesses the proper chambering. If the rifle says ".223 Rem" then you CAN NOT use 5.56 NATO. If the rifle says ".223 Rem/5.56" you are safe only using the M193 NATO round and not any of the newer NATO rounds like the M855. If the rifle says "5.56NATO" then you are clear to use any the full array of NATO 5.56 ammo. Many AR style platforms only state ".223 Rem".

6 2x4's basically. I'd like to see what a .280 remington can do.

Clearly any bullet is dangerous,The 7.62 round has way more penetration power and because of its bigger width than the .223 it does a lot more damage making a bigger hole! There is a vid on here with the .223 and 7.62 compared for the sake of this very same argument. Both were shot at 25-30 yrds indoor range at a bundle of 4 4x4 treated lumber deck posts bundled together facing length wise toward you! the .223 didnt even enter the wood! 7.62 went all the way through it over 1ft! Discovery ch!

@ih8suvz Except for the mini-14 targets models. Those are specifically .223

are 223 rounds alot less powerful than 243, 270 and 30/30 or are they close to the same just less range and accuracy

Well, that's easy *and* hard to answer. Easy, because you can look at any number of books to find the energy delivered (in ft-lbs) at a given range. Just compare the numbers; a higher number is more energy. It's hard, because what does the bullet actually do? Many will point out that the .223 is designed to tumble, doing more damage.
Then there's us (and the people who comment here). We just shoot stuff and look at it and compare. Does that answer it either? No, but it seems to me :-)
