X-eye 3D movie of Locomotive 3007.

The 3D illusion is created by looking at the right image with your left and and the left image with your right. With practice you can do this freestyle but a small wedge prism makes it even easier.

Instructions for making a set of 3D glasses that may assist you in viewing x-eye 3d movies are also available for free here:

There's an anaglyphic version of this film here:

26 August 2007. Locomotive 3007, a 60 year old engine originally built in Glasgow returns to the city and is put on display in Goerge Square.
The 180-tonne steam locomotive which spent its working life in South Africa is to be an exhibit in the new Riverside Transport Museum.

This is my first experiment with my new digital 3D camera setup. I usually do still 3D photography but my new sony DSC-V3's do video so I thought I'd have a try at a 3D movie.

For those who ask how it's done:
You have 2 cameras strapped together with the lenses separated by about 6.5cm just like your 2 eyes. Start filming with your 2 cameras at precisely the same moment (that's the tricky bit - I use a box of electronic tricks to do this but you could also do a bit of post production editing to get your 2 films starting at precisely the same moment) You take the 2 resulting films and combine them with a program like "Stereo Movie Maker" which is excellent and free, so no reasons not to try it.
StereoMovieMaker will allow you to chose from several different 3d formats and will render up the final movie for you.

Just have to work on holding the camera still now.

Thanks to RogerTubed for the inspiration and advice.

  • Well, I watched both versions. I'd say Youtube compression doesn't like either sort of 3D. But nice shots of the locomotive. You could use the 16:9 youtube frame to get wider cross-eye versions.

  • Yes. I did that with my 4 most recent 3d vids.

  • just learned to veiw this cross eyed when am more used to the divergent method. its good, but the image seems smaller with this method whereas its bigger with the other method. anybody know why?

  • because your eyes are crossed as if you were looking at an very small object close up.

The cross eye method has the advantage that you can view very large images wheres with the other method you can't really view an image wider than 6 cm.

  • This is awesome shit!!

  • sooooooooo crap lamo

  • For those who have not yet succeeded, is a tip that will facilitate the visualization (a technique to get the videos side and just stay middle): Take your left hand and put on the left side of his face, close your right eye, move the hand until only the video to appear on the right ... Do the same with the right, right hand, left eye, left to vanish video ... now looks like this and open your two eyes ... Voile ^ ^. (more easy for adjust the focus.)

  • that video was PERFECCTTT !!!...... especially when passing through the bars, in front of the locomotive .... spans the wheel .... GREAT VIDEO!

  • Needs to be in high def before you can do proper 3D. Remember, the whole point is realism.

  • view with &ftm=18

  • wow it works!

  • well to cross ur eyes try to watch the left image with ur left eye with ur head pointed to the middle of the screen and then automaticly ur right eye will see the left image and ENJOY !! .. well its not that 3d but nice

  • you need an iq of two digits.

  • how does this work? My eyes allways look to the middle!
