Provided here is a short scene from a true American classic "The Bells Of Saint Mary's" The scene opens as Father O'Malley (Bing Crosby) is about to be introduced by Sister Benedict (Ingrid Bergman) to the students of the school. The children stand before the nuns, facing the America 'Stars and Stripes' while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our United States Constitution reflects the views of our Founding Fathers in a Secular Government "by and for the People" while at the same time protecting the freedom of any religious belief, or in no specific belief at all. Another example would be the little known "Treaty of Tripoli" which was ratified by the U.S. Senate, and signed by President John Adams on June 10, 1797, this document declares:

"As the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Musselmen; and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries..."

  • "endowed by their Creator" quote from United States Declaration of independence. Merely adding under God does not constitute a law establishing a religion.

  • @NewAmericaNow ~ You realize of course... That the Declaration of Independence is NOT the Constitution of the United States, which forms the legal basis for the country, in which "God" or "Creator" do not appear. Nice try though.

  • More elegant without the divisive "under God". The pledge should be restored.

I'm pretty sure the world was around long before your Jesus was dreamt up and it will still be around long after he's forgotten with the rest of mythology.

  • @NewAmericaNow

"endowed by their Creator" is not preferential or specific. It can mean anyone's God(s) or Deities. "One Nation Under God" however is very specific, and establishes a preference for the monotheistic religious view and the Biblical/Abrahamic God in particular.

  • This is how it is supposed to be said.

  • SO WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO??? TAKE GOD OUT OF THE PLEDGE??? JESUS IS ALL THAT THERE IS IN THE WORLD!!!

HE IS YOUR BOSS AND MINE. THERE IS NOTHING WITHOUT JESUS CHRIST AND YOU OWE EVERYTING YOUR LIFE TO HIM. YOU WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT JESUS CHRIST AND YOU KNOW IT, YOUR JUST HIDING.

    JESUS IS LORD!!!

    SATAN IS NOTHING!!!

  • It's fine without the line, and it's fine with the line. The important element of the pledge is of what the pledge is to and for. Allegiance! That's what's been lost, ignored, and discarded today. The two word insertion during the 50's is not the primary concern of our pledge.

  • What about the many of us in America who believe in Goddess, you know, the one who'e higher than God.

  • Do you fear issues? The only reason anyone sweeps the church/state separation issue under their personal little rug of discomfort is because they're afraid of open debate, because the answer might be that it's imperative to keep church and state separate in any government. Of course, the greedy, powermongering neocons have distorted everything into a "patriotism" issue.
